Compound Words in English: Types and Examples

When two or more root words are combined to make a new, different, and unique word, it is called a Compound Word. New words are created with specific meanings by merging two or more existing words. There are three types of Compound Words-
- Open Compound Words
- Closed Compound Words
- Hyphenated Compound Words
Open Compounds are written as two separate words but said together as one word with its own meaning. They are always made up of two or more words written separately, with a space between them.

Closed Compounds are formed when two particular words are joined together. They are always linked or united with two unique words, without using a space between them.

Hyphenated Compounds are formed by using a hyphen. Two or more words are systematically connected with a hyphen to prevent ambiguity or uncertainty.
