Rewrite the following sentences in the ways instructed:

1. All his work being finished in good time, he has a long interval of rest in the evening.
(Rewrite as a compound sentence)
Ans: All his work is finished in good time and so he has a long interval of rest in the evening.


2. Early rising is good.
(Rewrite beginning with ‘It is….’)

Ans: It is good to rise early.


3. He knows that he has plenty of time to do all the work and is not tempted to hurry over any part of it.
(Rewrite beginning with ‘Knowing that….’)
Ans: Knowing that he has plenty of time to do all the work, he is not tempted to hurry over any part of it.


4. Forests, jungles and wetlands evoked the admiration of the world.
(Rewrite using ‘used to’)

Ans– Forests, jungles and wetlands used to evoke the admiration of the world.


5. We inherited the British system of management.
(Rewrite using the Perfect Present Tense)

Ans: We have inherited the British system of management.


6. The British DFO traversed his territory on horseback or by elephant.
(Rewrite using ‘either…or’)

Ans: The British DFO traversed his territory either on horseback or by elephant.


7. They held a trial. They condemned him to death.
(Rewrite using ‘which’)

Ans: They held a trial which condemned him to death.


8. But he refused to do so.
(Rewrite using a gerund)

Ans: But he refused doing so.


9. Without the Nile, Egypt would be a desert.
(Use ‘If….not’)

Ans: If Egypt did not have the Nile, it would be a desert.


10. This river has given Egypt the fertile area.
(Rewrite beginning with ‘The fertile area….’)
Ans: The fertile area has been given to Egypt by this river.


11. Overtaking the record was a mere formality.
(Rewrite using the ‘infinitive’ form of the word underlined)
Ans: To overtake the record was a mere formality.


12. They were able to play the game on equal terms.
(Rewrite using ‘could’)

Ans: They could play the game on equal terms.


13. It has been a very long and breathtaking journey.
(Rewrite as an exclamatory sentence)

Ans: What a long and breathtaking journey it has been!


14. The average consumer is not able to differentiate between guarantees of quality.
(Rewrite using ‘can’)

Ans: The average consumer cannot differentiate between guarantees of quality.


15. Their products are superior.
(Rewrite as a negative sentence)

Ans: Their products are not inferior.


16. As a pupil she was not particularly brilliant.
(Rewrite using ‘when’)

Ans: When she was a pupil, she was not particularly brilliant.


17. A few derelict rooms on the upper floors were secretly prepared.
(Rewrite beginning with ‘They….’)

Ans: They prepared a few derelict rooms on the upper floors.


18. I feel like a song-bird whose wings have been torn off.
(Rewrite removing ‘whose’)

Ans: I feel like a song-bird with torn-off wings.


19. Olivia decided to use the diary which her parents had given to her.
(Rewrite removing ‘which’)

Ans: Olivia decided to use the diary given to her by her parents.


20. She wrote, “I feel like a song-bird whose wings have been torn off.”
(Rewrite in indirect speech)

Ans: She wrote that she felt like a song-bird whose wings had been torn off.
